SEPTEMBER 2014 UPDATE: As of July 1, 2014, we resumed axis doe hunts, which will be in effect through October Bowhunting and Regular Nov-Dec Whitetail Seasons. Keep in mind that Regular Season hunts allow substitution of axis does for whitetails in hunt packages. Mother Nature has been somewhat helpful since Memorial Day weekend, and some rainfall has been received, though not enough to put the drouth effects behind us. We probably will continue to see long-term effects of the drouth of the past three years. We are not alone, as the entire Hill Country area is still in severe drouth. Hogs are still tearing up the bottom seeking whatever it is that they dig for. Hunting conditions (i.e. animals coming to the feeders) should continue to improve as we move into the rest of 2014. One can only hope. Plentiful supplies of turkeys are being seen, probably because of the fact that our East Prong of the Nueces River has never run dry through the drouth of record experienced for the past 3 years. We do not hunt axis does during the spring, until July 1 because of the larger number of dependent fawns during those months. We are currently booking the few remaining hunting slots left for the Regular Seasons, as well as for exotic trophy hunts. Exotic Trophy Hunts for Axis bucks and Aoudad rams can be booked any time of the year outside Regular Whitetail and Spring Turkey Seasons, and trophies can always be taken in addition to a Regular Season hunt. A very nice furnished cabin is included in the hunt fee for the comfort and enjoyment of our hunters: all-electric, with AC, heat, all cooking and eating utensils, microwave, hotplate, coffee pot, small fridge, etc. Hunters bring their own food and drink, and do their own cooking. We are always on hand to help our hunters, but you will mostly be on your own for your hunt. Because of the poor food conditions ever since 2012, whitetails may have suffered some mortality, especially does and fawns. WT bucks taken in 2013 season were in surprisingly good condition, even though does were less so. Aoudads, which are desert animals, don't seem to have suffered much at all. Axis deer also seem to have come through relatively unscathed by the drouth, though we are not seeing quite as large herds as in some previous years. Some gold medal size Axis bucks were seen Memorial Day 2014 weekend, and also in early July, along with some does and young animals. WE ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT OVER-HUNT OUR PLACE WITH EXCESSIVE BOOKINGS, SO CALL SOON IF YOU WANT TO OBTAIN ONE OF THE LIMITED NUMBERS OF HUNTS OFFERED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

MORE ABOUT OUR PLACE

Bring your rifle or your bow (and your camera) and come hunt with us! We have year-round hunting packages available, whether you are interested in native whitetails, turkeys, or exotics such as Axis deer, Aoudad Sheep or wild hogs. J&L's Nooney Paw-Paw Mountain Ranch is remotely located in the beautiful Southwest Texas Hill Country, not far from Rocksprings, TX in Edwards County. The country is rugged and beautiful, with steep canyons in the "breaks" of the Edwards Plateau, where the rivers begin their flow southward to the Gulf of Mexico.

The property is bordered on the east by the clear, cool waters of the East Prong of the Nueces River and a heavily wooded pecan bottom. Because of the unique location in a sharp bend of the river, wild game of all varieties naturally gathers here, drawn by the abundant forage and social opportunities. Nooney Paw-Paw Mountain forms the west boundary, overshadowing the river bottom. Wild game frequently seen includes native whitetail deer, Rio Grande turkeys, wild hogs (Russian and feral),as well as exotic Axis deer, and Aoudad sheep. Several record book Axis bucks have been taken recently. Aoudad sheep also grow to record book sizes on the mountain side of the Ranch. There are no high fences, thereby providing more of a fair chase hunt. We maintain feeders and blinds to provide better chances of success.> As participants in a Wildlife Management Plan with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, we do not run livestock and strive to keep the habitat as favorable to wildlife as possible. Because the environment is fragile and we want to provide maximum protection, we do not allow the use of ATV's or four-wheelers on the Ranch. We also limit hunting to only a few hunts per year, never "over hunting" the land.

As a hunter at the Ranch, you will be pretty much on your own, though we will provide assistance if requested. You will be staying in a nice new, well-equipped cabin near the house. We will show you to the blinds, provide information as to feeder times, and give advice. We always have recent videos of what we've seen at the various hunting blinds for your viewing enjoyment. Given all that, your relative skill as a hunter will largely determine your success. Because we are not a high fence ranch, we cannot guarantee a kill, but your chances should be excellent.
