A BIT MORE ABOUT OUR PLACE AND LOCATION
Bring your rifle or your bow (and your camera) and
come hunt with us! . J&L's Nooney Paw-Paw Mountain Ranch is
remotely located in the beautiful Southwest Texas Hill Country, not far from
Rocksprings and Campwood, TX in Edwards County. The
country is rugged and beautiful, with steep canyons in the "breaks" of the
Edwards Plateau, where the rivers begin their flow southward to the Gulf of
Mexico.
The property is bordered on the east by the clear, cool
waters of the East Prong of the Nueces River and a heavily wooded pecan
bottom. Because of the unique location
in a sharp bend of the river, wild game of all varieties naturally gathers
here, drawn by the abundant forage and social opportunities. Nooney Paw-Paw Mountain forms the west
boundary, overshadowing the river bottom.
Wild game frequently seen includes native whitetail deer, Rio Grande turkeys, wild hogs (Russian and feral),as well as exotic Axis deer, Aoudad sheep, as well as some other exotics. Several record book Axis bucks
have been taken, and Aoudad sheep grow to record book sizes on Nooney Paw-Paw Mountain. This is a low-fence ranch, thereby providing more of a fair chase hunt. Year-round corn feeding with enclosed box blinds provides better chances of success. As participants in a Wildlife Management Plan with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, we have no livestock, striving to keep the habitat as natural for wildlife as possible. Hunters should not bring their own ATVs; only the Ranch owners will be allowed to use them.

Texas Day Hunt Whitetail, Axis, Aoudad, Turkey and Hogs on J&L's "Nooney Paw-Paw Mountain Ranch"
***************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
Our Ranch is remote, and we have separate facilities for lodging, so by continuing caution and social distancing, we feel our premises are relatively safe for hunts. Covid variants are still of concern to us, as we are senior citizens and most vulnerable, even though we have had our latest boosters. We must continue to require wearing of masks and safe distancing when face-to-face encounters occur between us outdoors or indoors. Also, careful cleaning of the cabin and bathroom when you leave will be expected, leaving it like you find it. We will make sure the cabin has been cleaned thoroughly before you arrive. PLEASE BRING K95 OR EQUIVALENT MASKS TO WEAR WHEN AROUND US INDOORS OR IN CLOSE CONTACT. MOST IMPORTANT, DO NOT COME IF YOU ARE FEELING ILL IN ANY WAY, INCLUDING A COLD OR FLU--WE JUST CANNOT TAKE CHANCES WITH OUR HEALTH OR YOURS. Bear in mind that medical help and facilities are not close, and the nearest hospital is in Uvalde, over 60 miles away. Our ranch is not a good place to fall ill.
Exotics may be hunted all year round, including during any of the regular seasons, in addition to any regular season package. Our hunts are quite limited in number throughout the year, so you should call soon to secure a booking. NOTE: we have been forced due to higher prices for feed and fuel to modestly raise our prices for all Hunt Packages(see prices below). There are no changes to prices for the Exotic Price List.
Where else will you find a Regular Season Whitetail Hunt for $850 which includes 3 days hunting, a buck and doe, 2 turkeys, free hogs, as well as lodging, AND substitution of axis does for your whitetail??? If you are into exotics like Axis Deer or Aoudad, among others, there is a $550 Exotic Hunt fee, where you pay off the Price List for whatever you may take; this base price also includes lodging, free hogs, and 3 days of hunting. THE BEST, MOST ECONOMICAL, NO-FRILLS DAY HUNT PACKAGES YOU WILL FIND ANYWHERE! If you are looking for a "cheap" axis hunt, this might be the one you are looking for. Many people desire Meat Hunts for axis does, but we only hunt axis does from July 1 to February 28 each year because of many small, dependent fawns on the ground at that time. You may take axis does in season or axis bucks, or any exotics, in addition to Whitetail Deer, with a kill fee from our Exotic Price List. Unfortunately for our environment, feral hogs are extremely numerous, and are included free in every hunt package throughout the year. Hunting strictly for hogs is considered to be an Exotic Hunt, with a $450 hunt fee which includes use of the cabin lodging. You are highly encouraged to take hogs, as many as you want! Check our various HUNTING PACKAGES below for more details.
If you like to call coyotes, we welcome you at just about any time of the year! We hear coyotes hunting the river bottom, apparently having little or no effect on the extensive hog activities there. If you've never been hog hunting in the Texas Hill Country, you would be in for a treat; they are quite a challenge to hunt because of the varied terrain on our place. Only hogs, coyotes or certain varmints may be hunted at night with lights with our special permission. (Detailed information on HUNT PACKAGES available below) PLEASE NOTE: WE WILL NOT ALLOW "ASSAULT STYLE" RIFLES TO BE USED ON OUR PLACE--ONLY TRADITIONAL, SCOPED, LIMITED MAGAZINE HUNTING RIFLES CAN BE USED ON THE J & L RANCH. WE DO NOT CONSIDER AR 15 OR ANY SIMILAR ASSAULT STYLE RIFLES TO BE LEGITIMATE HUNTING RIFLES.< /b>
We have plenty of Rio Grande turkeys. Large flocks of turkeys, have been observed all during the recent Whitetail Seasons. Except for Spring Turkey Season, hens or gobblers may be taken in Edwards County. Trophy Axis, Sika and Aoudad are ready for the taking at any time. A large red stag was taken in June 2021, and more have been seen since then, most notably a very large one in velvet. Groups of axis bucks have been observed in the Pecan Bottom, some of which are Gold Medal size. Three Gold Medal axis were taken this past spring. With no high fencing on the Ranch, all kinds of trophy animals move up and down the river valley, and you never know what you might see. Aoudad Sheep are seen year-round, mostly on the hills, and many are taken; smoked Aoudad sausage is delicious, or just take them for the trophy and give us the rest! 300+ lb. trophy class hog boars have been taken, and there are numerous 200+pounders, as well as many smaller.
LODGING AND FACILITIES: A small furnished, well-appointed cabin is included in the hunt fee, with potable, running water, all-electric, with AC/heat, all cooking and eating utensils, microwave, hotplate, coffee pot, small (4 cu. ft.) fridge, nice charcoal BBQ barrel grill (Bring your own charcoal--NO FIREWOOD PLEASE; plenty of dry firewood is available.). A hot shower bath is located in an adjacent building. Hunters bring their own food and drink, sleeping bags and towels, and do their own cooking. There are 2 single beds and 1 double, to accommodate as many as 4 persons (if 2 can sleep together). There is a lighted hanger to dress your deer. You should bring plenty of ice chests and ice to take care of your cold goods and game. This is an old-fashioned, minimally guided, do-it-yourself hunt, with no guide fees or hidden costs; we cannot guarantee success, but will do our best to help you enjoy a good hunt. We are always on hand to help but you will mostly be on your own.
